Quick answer: No. A loading phase is optional. Taking 3–5 g of creatine monohydrate every day fills your muscle stores in about 3–4 weeks; loading with ~20 g a day for 5–7 days fills them in about one week. After a month you end up in exactly the same place. Loading buys you speed and costs you a higher chance of bloating, stomach upset and a quick jump on the scale. Choose based on how soon you want the effect and how sensitive your stomach is.

The one study that settles it
The research that defined creatine dosing compared two approaches: 20 g a day for 6 days, and 3 g a day for 28 days. Both raised muscle creatine by roughly the same amount. Loading got there in under a week; the low dose got there in about four weeks. Every later study has confirmed the pattern. There is no version of this where loading produces a higher ceiling, more muscle, or better results at week eight. It produces the same result, sooner.

When loading makes sense
- You have a date. A meet, a race, a training block that starts Monday, a trip where you want the extra rep. Loading gets the effect in a week.
- You tolerate large doses. Some people take 20 g split across meals with zero issues. If that's you, loading has no real downside.
- You're heavier. Larger bodies have more muscle to saturate; loading at 0.3 g/kg scales up automatically and can make a noticeable difference in speed.
When skipping loading makes sense
- You have a sensitive stomach or you've had bloating from supplements before. Loading is where most complaints come from; 3–5 g almost never causes them.
- You don't want the scale to jump. The 1–2 kg of water arrives in days with loading and over weeks without. Either way it's water inside muscle, not fat, but if the number bothers you, go slow.
- You just want the simplest habit. One scoop a day, every day, including rest days. Consistency over months is what matters; the first week's speed is a rounding error by month three.

The "loading is a myth" argument, and where it's wrong
Loading isn't a myth; it measurably speeds saturation. The myth is that you need it, or that it produces better results. Supplement brands like loading because it uses more product; some coaches like it because clients "feel" something in week one (mostly water and fuller muscles). Neither changes the biology: the ceiling is the ceiling.
The opposite myth, that loading is dangerous, isn't supported either. Loading doses have been studied for decades in healthy adults. The costs are comfort and convenience, not safety.
A middle path: 10 g a day
If you want faster than four weeks but gentler than 20 g, 10 g a day (two 5 g doses) gets most people to saturation in roughly 10–14 days with far fewer stomach complaints. It's a reasonable compromise and the option most people never hear about.
What happens if you skip loading and just start with 5 g?
Week one: probably nothing you'll notice. Week two: slightly fuller muscles, maybe a pound on the scale. Weeks three to four: hard sets start to feel a rep easier. From there, identical to someone who loaded. You will not have "missed" anything.
What happens if you load and then stop taking creatine?
