Does Creatine Make You Tired or Sleepy?

CCreatine Dosage team · Virix LabsSources citedUpdated Sep 2026
Quick answer

Quick answer: No, creatine doesn't make you tired; in controlled studies it tends to reduce fatigue and may even help with sleep deprivation. But plenty of people do feel sluggish in their first week or two, and there's usually a reason that isn't the creatine itself: dehydration during a loading phase, a harder training block that started the same week, cutting carbs, poor sleep, stomach upset from big doses, or expecting a stimulant effect that creatine never gives. Fix those and the tiredness almost always goes.

What the research says

Creatine's job is to help muscles and brain regenerate ATP, the energy currency, during high-demand moments. Studies consistently show less fatigue in repeated hard efforts, and several trials found creatine blunted the drop in mental performance from sleep loss. There's no mechanism or study showing creatine causes drowsiness. Where fatigue appears in study side-effect logs, it's at the same rate as placebo.

Why you might feel tired anyway

  1. Loading without enough water. In the loading week, 20 g a day pulls water into muscle. If you don't add a glass or two, you can end up mildly under-hydrated: headache, sluggishness, a "flat" feeling. Fix: split doses, drink a bit more, or skip loading. See Loading side effects.
  2. You started training harder at the same time. People usually begin creatine alongside a new program. The program is what's making you tired. Fix: sleep, food, patience.
  3. Low carbs. Creatine draws water and glycogen into muscle; on a low-carb diet you may feel drained and the scale won't show the "fullness." Fix: eat enough carbs around training.
  4. Stomach upset. Bloating or loose stools from big single doses wear you down. Fix: 3–5 g doses with food.
  5. Expecting a buzz. Creatine is not a pre-workout. If you replaced caffeine with creatine, that's the fatigue you notice.
  6. Timing coincidence. Some people take creatine with a big post-workout meal and blame the post-meal dip on creatine. Fix: take it with breakfast for a week and compare.
  7. Cycle timing (women). Starting creatine in the luteal phase, when energy is already lower and water retention higher, makes the first week feel worse than it is. Fix: judge after a full cycle. See Creatine for women.

Can creatine make you sleepy?

Not directly. If anything, a few small studies suggest creatine may improve alertness during sleep restriction. Feeling sleepy after taking it is almost always the meal, the training, or dehydration. If you take it at night, it won't disturb sleep either; it's not a stimulant.

Can creatine make you feel "off"?

In the first week, a small number of people describe feeling slightly puffy, heavy or foggy. This tracks with water shifts and stomach issues from loading and disappears when doses are split or loading is skipped. If "off" means dizziness, palpitations or severe headaches, stop and see a clinician; that's not a normal creatine effect.

How to tell if it's the creatine

Take 3–5 g with breakfast (not post-workout), split any loading into 5 g doses, add a glass or two of water, and keep training and sleep constant for a week. If you still feel tired, stop creatine for a week: if nothing changes, it wasn't the creatine. If it was, you're in a small minority and the simplest move is to not take it.

What creatine working actually feels like

Mostly nothing. The signs are indirect: slightly fuller muscles and a pound or two on the scale in week one, an extra rep or two on hard sets by week three or four. No energy rush, no sleepiness. If you feel neither, it's working the way it's supposed to.

FAQ

What are the signs creatine is working?

A small early weight gain (water in muscle), fuller muscles, and better performance on repeated hard sets after a few weeks.

Does creatine make you sleep a lot?

No evidence of that. Sleepiness after taking it is usually the meal or the training load.

Can creatine make you feel off?

Some people feel puffy or foggy in the loading week; splitting doses and hydrating fixes it. Anything severe isn't creatine and needs a clinician.

What is the biggest side effect of creatine?

Temporary water weight (1–2 kg) and stomach upset from large single doses. Both are avoidable with smaller doses.

Why do doctors say no to creatine?

Kidney caution based on older assumptions or on patients with kidney disease; for healthy adults, the safety data is strong.

Will I look leaner if I stop creatine?

You'll lose the water inside muscle over a few weeks, so muscles look less full. Body fat doesn't change.

Should I take creatine if I'm already exhausted all the time?

Creatine won't fix chronic fatigue, and it isn't the cause. Persistent exhaustion deserves a check-up (iron, thyroid, sleep) rather than a supplement change.
