Two clocks: saturation vs. results
"How long does creatine take to work" has two answers, and most confusion comes from mixing them up.
The first clock is saturation: how long until your muscles hold as much creatine as they can. With a loading phase (about 20 g a day, or 0.3 g per kg, split into four doses), muscle creatine rises roughly 20% in 5–7 days. At a steady 3 g a day, the same level is reached in about 28 days. Loading changes the speed, not the destination.
The second clock is results you can see or feel. Water inside muscle shows up within days. An extra rep or two on hard sets takes weeks of training on saturated muscle. A difference in the mirror takes months, because creatine amplifies training; it doesn't replace it.

What you notice first (and what you won't)
Creatine doesn't "kick in" like caffeine. There's no feeling on the day you take it; if a product gives you a buzz, something else in it is doing that. In order of appearance:
- The scale, week 1–2. Creatine is stored with water inside muscle cells, so most people gain 1–2 kg (2–4 lb) in the first one to two weeks. This is fluid inside the muscle, not fat and not fluid under the skin. Muscles may look slightly fuller; this is the whole basis of every "7-day creatine transformation" video.
- The training log, weeks 4–8. Once muscle is saturated, phosphocreatine regenerates ATP faster during short, hard efforts. That means one or two more reps at the same weight, or the same reps feeling easier, and quicker recovery between sets. You'll see it in your notes before you feel it.
- The mirror, weeks 8–12. Extra reps compound. Over an 8–12 week block, people combining creatine with resistance training gain measurably more strength and a little more lean mass (meta-analyses put the difference around 1 kg) than people training without it. This is the "after" that's real, and it only exists with training.
Week-by-week: what's happening and what you may notice
The table assumes a loading phase; without one, shift everything about two to three weeks later and shrink the early water gain.

Why some people see nothing
If it's been six weeks and nothing has moved, run through this list before deciding creatine "doesn't work for you."
- You may be a non-responder. Around 20–30% of people show little rise in muscle creatine when they supplement. Those who already have high muscle creatine (typically heavy meat and fish eaters) gain the least, because their stores were close to full before they started. Responders start lower and have more room to fill.
- Vegetarians and vegans respond more. Dietary creatine comes almost entirely from meat and fish, so people who don't eat them start with lower stores and show larger gains in muscle creatine, performance and lean mass when they supplement.
- The dose is too low or too inconsistent. Creatine works by accumulation, so it needs 3–5 g every day, including rest days. - You aren't training hard enough to use it. Creatine helps in sets near failure, sprints and repeated efforts. Without training, you get the water and nothing else.
- You're expecting the wrong thing. Creatine is not a fat burner, a stimulant or a pump product. If you were waiting for a feeling, it's already working and you missed it.
How to check that creatine is working
Because the effect is modest and gradual, you need a baseline or you'll never be sure. Set this up on day 0:
- Weigh in on day 0, then day 7, 30 and 90, morning, before food. Expect +1–2 kg by day 7 if loading (by week 2–3 if not). If it moved and then stayed put, that's exactly normal.
- Log two or three benchmark lifts at a fixed weight, or a fixed sprint interval. Compare week 0 to weeks 4 and 8. One to two extra reps at the same load is the signature.
- Note recovery between sets. Saturated muscle rebuilds phosphocreatine faster, so the third and fourth sets feel less like a cliff.
- Keep everything else constant. Don't start creatine, a new program and a calorie surplus in the same week if you want to know what creatine did.
There is no home test for muscle creatine. Blood creatinine rising on a lab panel doesn't mean it's working; it just reflects normal breakdown, which is worth mentioning to your doctor before bloodwork.
When results fade after stopping
There is no need to cycle off creatine, but if you stop, the timeline runs in reverse. Muscle stores fall back toward baseline over roughly 4 weeks (up to 6 for some). The water goes with them, so expect the scale to drop 1–2 kg and muscles to look a touch flatter. The extra reps fade over the same window.
What you keep: every bit of strength and muscle you built while training on creatine. If you come back later, 3–5 g a day rebuilds stores in three to four weeks; load again only if you want the effect back within a week. Missing a day or two changes nothing; just resume the daily dose.
Notes for women
The timeline is the same, with three practical differences.
- Water and the cycle. Water retention in the week before a period stacks on top of creatine's water, so a first reading taken that week looks worse than it is. Judge after one full cycle, or start in the week after your period.
- Smaller loading, smaller gain. Women store less creatine in muscle on average, so they respond at least as well. Loading scales by weight: 15–18 g a day is enough for most women, and the water gain usually lands around 0.5–1 kg (1–2 lb). Many women skip loading to avoid the scale jump and reach the same place at 3–5 g in three to four weeks.
- Strength shows in the same window. Extra reps at weeks 4–8 and measurable strength by weeks 8–12, provided you're lifting. "Bulky" doesn't happen. Everything else is on Creatine for women.
